Jasmine

I stared at Camille. She was giggling as she stuffed a corn dog bite into her mouth. It was a beautiful and breezy day as we sat on the patio at the James Coney Island restaurant. She was laughing about something nobody else found funny.

“So how long are we just going to pretend that everything is fine? How long are we going to stay mad at Alexis?” I asked. It had been three days and neither Camille nor Alexis had made a move to patch things up. Me and Angel spent the first couple of days just as mad as Camille, but now we both felt it was time to deal with this.

“Who?” Camille asked, trying to look like she really didn’t know who I was talking about.

I clicked my teeth. “You know, your best friend, Alexis?”

“You mean my former best friend.”

“Come on, Camille. Don’t you think we need to at least hear her out?” I had spent a lot of time trying to sort all of this out and I’d just come to the conclusion that Alexis had to have a really good reason for getting back together with Anthony—although for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what it was. But that was the only thing I could think of that would explain this.

“What’s there to hear?” Camille nonchalantly said as she slurped her soda. “She chose her side. So I don’t have anything to say to her. It’s bad enough I have to watch out for these other tricks trying to take my man; now I gotta worry about my own friends? Bump that.”

“So what are we gonna do?” Angel asked.

“I don’t know what y’all gon’ do, but me, I let those other girls slide when they jumped me. I’m not about to let someone else, especially a so-called friend, make a fool out of me.”

Angel leaned in and looked Camille in the eye. “What does that mean?”

“It means what it means,” Camille said, rolling her neck. I could tell that look in her eyes wasn’t good.

“Camille, what are you planning?” Angel asked.

“I’m planning payback. Alexis doesn’t know who she’s messing with.” She sipped her drink again. “But I’m about to show her.”

“Th-this doesn’t sound good,” Angel stuttered.

“That’s ’cause it ain’t. You remember when we were looking at getting those girls that jumped me. Well, since Keysha is crazy I think I need to drop a little bug in her ear about Alexis. Maybe even make her think Anthony was going to get back with her until Alexis talked him out of it. And I’m going to make sure she gets this.” She pulled a folded-up piece of paper out of her purse and slid it across the table. I was the first to take it. I opened it. My eyes grew wide as I read it.

“Read it out loud,” Angel said.

I shook my head. “‘Dear Keysha, I’m a good friend of Anthony and therefore I want to see him happy. I know that he was happiest when he was with you.
